Cory: Gallo Should Have Won All-Star MVP, But I’m Glad He Didn’t

Joey Gallo should have won the 2019 All Star Game MVP, but he didn’t. I’m also glad he didn’t.

Look, it’s not the most logical take because any reasonable fan would want their biggest star to win an award like this on a stage in front of the biggest stars in his game.

It’s a really cool thing to win this in front of your peers, and that’s one of the many reasons I believe it was justified that Shane Bieber, who pitched an inning in the fifth and struck out the side in front of his home crowd Cleveland, won.

Gallo caught a couple of fly balls in the outfield and hit a homerun on the first pitch he saw. That homerun was essentially the game winning run of the All Star game for the American League.

I’m glad he didn’t win it though, and here’s why.

I think Gallo has taken a fine approach to this season, and I think he has gotten tougher mentally, with his discipline at the plate and his day-to-day discipline in the grind.

It looks like Gallo is finally starting to feel comfortable knowing that he belongs in this league, and that he belongs in the upper echelon of superstars in this league.

These are all things I love about the young outfielder.

But I don’t want the middle of the season to be “enough” for him. I want him to keep carrying a chip on his shoulder, keep living that grind, keep finding motivations that will drive him through the rest of this season.

He’s a pro athlete and he’s a monster of a man physically, but sometimes we just need those extra things to kick us down a little bit that help us rise more. I think he deserved the award, but I also think he can use it to say, “I’m still not quite there yet.”

If Gallo can finish this season strong, there’s no doubt in my mind that he will continue launching himself into that elite star that he is destined to be. And collecting all of the shards the doubters leave behind while redirecting that energy positively towards his goals, will be what makes Gallo the potential league MVP we all think he is capable of becoming.
