Willie Calhoun Sent To Minors, Hunter Pence Makes The Team

SURPRISE, AZ (105.3 THE FAN) - Texas Rangers manager Chris Woodward said Thursday he has sent Willie Calhoun down to the minors, while Hunter Pence officially makes the team.

Chris 'Woody' Woodward made the announcement early Thursday as the team is just a week away from Opening Day in Arlington.

Woodward said that Willie has brought up a desire to learn CF and RF to add to LF so as to increase versatility.

There's no doubt that Willie has accomplished a ton from this off-season until now. But, as Woodward pointed out, there are guys who have done that type of work for several years and he challenged Willie to maintain his commitment.

For Pence, it became clear that the Rangers could use him as a right-handed bat. He also provides great leadership, according to The Fan's Jared Sandler.

The Rangers have yet to decide whether they are rolling with a 7 or 8 man pen.

The rotation will start (in order): LHP Mike Minor, RHP Edinson Volquez, RHP Lance Lynn, LHP Drew Smyly, RHP Shelby Miller.

Jeffrey Springs has also been informed that he's made the team.

Woody talked about Springs's ability to not just get lefties but get righties, his swing-and-miss abilities, and multi-inning potential as reasons they like him so much.
