Sean Lee: 'I Plan On Playing' In Cowboys Preseason Week 2

SANTA CLARA (105.3 THE FAN) - The Dallas Cowboys knew what they were doing in Thursday's 24-21 loss to the San Francisco 49ers to open the preseason - at least when it comes to star linebacker Sean Lee.

They need him to play 16 games and, playoffs notwithstanding, not one game more. So he dressed out Thursday but also sat out, serving as a team captain, helmet on and all, before being relegated to cheerleader.

He doesn't plan on doing the same in Week 2.

"We have a day off (back at training camp in Oxnard) on Friday, and then we get back at it, with my plan being to play next week.''

Next week? The Cowboys will have closed the California portion of camp and will take on the Cincinnati Bengals at AT&T Stadium on Saturday August 18.

Next week? Lee wants to play against the Bengals.

Maybe that will change -- or be changed by his coaches, who recognize the value of the Pro Bowler. In the last few years, a Lee-led Cowboys defense has been respectable or better. But when Lee is absent (he has missed 42 of 128 regular-season games in his career)?

Dallas' D generally stinks.

But Lee isn't "going rogue'' here. His plan will end up jibing with the coaches' plan, too. Same goes for his equivalent on the Dallas offense, as running back Ezekiel Elliott sat out Thursday and has little to prove until Week 1 of the regular season.

Discretion, somebody should remind Sean Lee, is the better part of valor, a philosophy we've seen in play in Oxnard in the form of his very limited padded practices ... and a philosophy from which he's about ready to bust free.
