REPORT: Texas Rangers And Oakland A's Talking Jurickson Profar Trade

December 12, 2018 - 1:36 pm

ARLINGTON (105.3 The Fan) - MLB Winter meetings are heating up, and the trade rumor mill is in full swing. Yesterday it was reported that the Rangers are willing to move Nomar Mazara and Jurikson Profar in trades. Today Ken Rosenthal is reporting that the Oakland A's and Texas Rangers are in talks about a trade centered around Profar.

The A's would play Profar at second base if they lose Jed Lowrie in free agency.

Profar's value is at it's highest since he was one of the top prospects in all of baseball in 2013.

The 25-year-old was one of the most productive, if not the most productive player at the plate for Texas last season. He was second on the team in hits (133), tied for third in home runs (20), tied for second in RBI (77), and finished third in OBP (.335) and OPS (.793).

Profar is slated to open as the Rangers third baseman in 2019 after Adrian Beltre retired this offseason.

"As the roster sits today ... we have moves to make and an offseason ahead of us, but Jurickson was one of our best players last year. ... You could argue he was our best player last year," general manager Jon Daniels said after Adrian Beltre announced his retirement. "Jurickson's an infielder (with Elvis Andrus and Rougned Odor already cemented at shortstop and second base) and it looks like third base is the best spot for him."

However, with the acquisition of Patrick Wisdom yesterday, the Rangers have other options at third if they decide to trade Profar. The 27-year-old Wisdom made his major league debut last season, hitting .260 with four home runs and 10 RBIs in 32 games. He spent most of the season at Triple-A Memphis, hitting .288 with 15 homers and 61 RBIs.
