No Lottery Luck: Mavs To Convey Pick To Hawks

May 14, 2019 - 7:46 pm

DALLAS (105.3 The Fan) – Once again, luck was not on the Dallas Mavericks’ side Tuesday night as the team landed the No. 10 slot in the upcoming NBA Draft, thus meaning they will convey the pick to the Atlanta Hawks as compensation for last year’s draft-day acquisition of Luka Doncic. Dallas also sent Atlanta the rights to last year’s No. 5 pick, which they turned into Trae Young.

Coming into the lottery, Dallas was tied with the New Orleans Pelicans and Memphis Grizzlies for the seventh worst record in the league, so it’s not as bad as what happened last year when they fell two spots in the lottery. However, Mavs fans will be quick to point out that it’s not good either as the franchise has yet to have any good luck in the history of the Lottery.

Of the now 16 times Dallas has been in the festivities, they have never moved higher than their projected position and have slipped from their projected position seven times.

The Mavs had a 26.3% chance of getting a top-4 pick and a 6% chance of landing the No. 1 overall selection.

By conveying the 2019 pick to the Atlanta Hawks, the Mavericks are guaranteed to own their first-round pick in 2020. Dallas owes an unprotected first-round pick in 2021 and a top-10 protected pick in 2023 to the New York Knicks as compensation for Kristaps Porzingis.
