Stephen Jones Says Xavier Woods Can Be Starting Free Safety

April 24, 2018 - 1:21 pm

DALLAS (105.3 The Fan) - Dallas Cowboys COO Stephen Jones joined 105.3 The Fan ahead of the team's NFL Draft press conference on Tuesday.

In the conversation with the GBAG Nation, Jones was asked a question about the club's thoughts on Xavier Woods chances of becoming a permanent starting free safety in the future.

"I think he can be a permanent free safety. He did so many things we like (last year). He'll obviously just get stronger here in the offseason than he already is, and he'll develop. But boy, he has things you can't coach. He's got the instinct to make plays on the ball like he did last year," Jones said. "We feel really good about Xavier having the skillset to be a permanent starting free safety."

Jones was then asked about the potential of making a trade at the position and said they would make a deal if it makes sense for the team.

"We don't ever rule out anything. We're always trying to improve. If there's a player whether that be safety... if we like him and he fits ... we're certainly open-minded to any of that," Jones said.

Dallas has been linked to Seattle Seahawks safety Earl Thomas throughout the offseason.
