RJ Choppy: Rangers Need To Trade Joey Gallo ... Eventually

June 12, 2019 - 10:30 am

DALLAS (105.3 The Fan) - Joey Gallo is turning into one of the best players in baseball right before our eyes. He's in the midst of having the most productive year of his young career, hitting 17 home runs and 41 RBI to go along with a .276 batting average, a .421 an on-base percentage and a 1.074 OPS.

While that's great for the Rangers right now, it's not great for them in three years when he can become a free agent, RJ Choppy said this morning on Shan and RJ on 105.3 The Fan.

RJ points out the fact that Gallo is represented by none other than Scott Boras, the super-agent known to advise his superstar clients to not sign a "hometown discount" with their current club and to test free agency to get the most money possible.

Boras, most recently, is the man who helped Bryce Harper land a 13-year, $330 million deal with the Philadelphia Phillies. Take a glance at the stats comparing Gallo and Harper this season and you'll see that Gallo is ahead in just about every statistical category.

For this reason, Choppy says the Rangers should expect Boras to ask for another recording-breaking contract when Gallo becomes a free agent after the 2022 season, so they should just trade him. Not now, but eventually.

"Joey Gallo, unless he leaves Scott Boras isn't going to (sign an extension with the Rangers). He's going to want a ton of money, and the Rangers, I don't believe are going to be able to pay eight years and $250 million," Choppy says. "You don't have to trade him right now. I would not suggest that. But there's going to come a point where they're going to have to make a decision."
