SURPRISE (105.3 The Fan) - The Texas Rangers are discussing the possibility of approaching some of their young core about signing contract extensions before Spring Training ends, according to T.R. Sullivan of

Sullivan reports that outfielders Joey Gallo and Nomar Mazara and likely closer Jose Leclerc would be the players Jon Daniels and his staff would most likely approach. Texas has previously engaged with Gallo and Mazara's agents last spring, but nothing ever materialized.

"It is something we have discussed internally," general manager Jon Daniels said, via Sullivan. "I think the idea of keeping some of our young group together for a long period of time is appealing. It is a matter of finding a willing partner and finding common ground."

Mazara is under club control for the next three seasons, making him a free agent after the 2021 season. Mazara avoided arbitration in the offseason by agreeing to a $3.3 million salary for 2019. Gallo has yet to reach an agreement for 2019 and can't be a free agent until after the 2022 season.
