Report: Dallas Stars To Make Denver University's Jim Montgomery Next Head Coach

May 02, 2018 - 1:59 pm

DALLAS (105.3 The Fan) - The Dallas Stars may have found their next head coach.

According to TSN Hockey's Bob McKenzie, Dallas will hire Denver University head coach Jim Montgomery to replace Ken Hitchcock.

McKenzie is reporting that an announcement is expected later this week.

Chris Dilks, the managing editor of SBN Hockey, reported on Tuesday that it was a "strong possibility" Montgomery would get the job.

The 48-year-old Montreal native spent five seasons in Denver and led them to the National Championship in 2017. If he is the Stars next head coach, he will finish with a 125-57-26 record as the coach of the Pioneers.

Montgomery, who has no previous coaching experience in the National Hockey League, appeared in 122 NHL games as a player. He retired in 2005 and became an assistant coach with Notre Dame for the 2005-06 season.

Hitchcock retired just one year after he returned to the helm in Dallas. He'll remain with the Stars in a consulting role.
