Garrett Confirms Meeting With McClain: "He Can Help Our Team"

May 09, 2018 - 3:25 pm

FRISCO (105.3 THE FAN) - On Tuesday morning, 105.3 The Fan's Mike Fisher reported that free agent defensive tackle Terrell McClain would be visiting the Cowboys this week. So, it wasn't much of a surprise when head coach Jason Garrett confirmed the meeting at the club's annual golf tournament on Wednesday.

Garrett did, however, discuss their interest in bringing McClain aboard.

"We'll spend some time with him tomorrow. Obviously, we know him well. He's been in our system. He's someone we like very much as a person, we think he can help us as a player. There's a business side to all these decisions on both sides, for our team and for him. But, we just want to spend some time with him. We really like him and he can help our team.

In terms of personnel, there is little argument that the Cowboys interior defensive line presently has the same look as last year’s.

That could soon change however if the Cowboys get their way and are able to persuade McClain to take part in a reunion.

McClain, the 6-2, 300-pounder who in 2016 was a stalwart for Dallas as a 1-tech tackle, spent three seasons with the Cowboys. He developed into a locker room favorite (his pre-practice dance moves became a tradition) but often was limited by a toe injury.

He signed with Washington last spring but compiled just 20 tackles and two sacks in 12 games. The Redskins drafted Da'Ron Payne in the first round to essentially replace him. (They took another tackle, Tim Settle, in the fifth and also employ 2017 first-round pick Jonathan Allen.)

The Cowboys are likely to start David Irving and Maliek Collins at the tackles, with Collins as the 1-tech. But McClain is more of a 1-tech by trade than Collins is, and is certainly a rotation-level player here. ... and maybe more.

We're gonna look at opportunities to improve the team," Dallas scouting guru Will McClay recently told 105.3FM The Fan. "He had a great run here and if he wants to come back we'll definitely look at it.''

That look will come tomorrow.
