July 23, 2018 - 10:24 am

DALLAS (105.3 The Fan) - FC Dallas sent shockwaves throughout Major League Soccer when they agreed to trade homegrown star midfielder Kellyn Acosta to the Colorado Rapids in exchange for forward Dominique Badji on Monday morning.

"Thank you fans for the last 10 years here. I started out as a young boy ... having aspirations to be a pro ... having the opportunity with the coaching staff and the owners to be here," Acosta said in a farewell message posted on the club's social media account. "It's a tough day for me. It's been a memorable 10 years, (we) won some trophies. ... I have some memories, some great memories, highs, and lows. It's been a great journey. I wish you guys all the best and I thank you for supporting me. We'll see what the future holds."

Dallas will also receive the Rapids first-round pick in the 2019 MLS SuperDraft and FC Dallas retains 50 percent of any international transfer value on Acosta until the closing of the 2020 summer transfer window. Colorado will receive Dallas' first and second-round selections of the draft in the deal.

"It's definitely something that I'm looking forward to," said Badji from Senegal. "It gives me a lot of energy and I'm just going to look forward to being out there and start that new chapter."

Acosta, 22, was signed as FC Dallas’ seventh Homegrown player on July 12, 2012. He has appeared in 116 regular season matches, scoring nine goals and 12 assists. Acosta has made 17 international appearances for the U.S. Men’s National Team since 2016.

“It’s never easy to say goodbye to a player like Kellyn Acosta who has meant so much to the entire FC Dallas family,” said FC Dallas Technical Director Fernando Clavijo. “Dominique gives us a scoring threat at the forward position that can be a difference-maker for us this season.

Badji is currently in Senegal obtaining his green card. He is expected to arrive in Frisco next week.
