FRISCO (105.3 The Fan) - As first reported by 105.3 The Fan, Dallas Cowboys tight end Rico Gathers was arrested on Friday night at about 10 p.m. on a charge of marijuana possession, Frisco Police tell me -- an incident that occurred just hours after both Jerry and Stephen Jones appeared on The Fan to issue positive statements about the prospects of the on-the-bubble player making today's 53-man roster.

Gathers, the former Baylor basketball player, has unique athleticism but as he hadn't played football since the eighth grade before the Cowboys took him in the sixth round of the 2016 NFL draft, he's generally run behind Geoff Swaim, Blake Jarwin and rookie Dalton Schultz on the Dallas depth chart this summer. Nevertheless, his eye-popping plays have made him a lightning rod for discussion. Is there a need for a fourth tight end? Should Dallas just keep three but allow Gathers to vault above someone else? Is there trade value in giving Gathers away?

By allegedly hanging out in a vehicle, parked not far from team headquarters at The Star, on the eve of cutdown day ... with the smell of marijuana wafting from the car ... Rico Gathers just made much easier the argument against retaining him.
