NBA Draft Lottery: Will The Mavs Finally Get Lucky?

May 13, 2019 - 3:38 pm

DALLAS (105.3 The Fan) - Dallas finished in a three-way tie with the New Orleans Pelicans and Memphis Grizzlies for the 7th worst record in the league.

According to Tankathon, The Mavs have a 26.3% chance of getting a top-4 pick and a 6% chance of landing the No. 1 overall selection.

Should Dallas not land in the top-4, their pick will be sent to Atlanta to complete last year's draft-day trade for prized rookie Luka Doncic. The pick the Mavericks sent to Atlanta along with the rights to another top-flight rookie, Trae Young, was top-5 protected. However, with the way the lottery rules work, the Mavs have no shot at landing the No. 5 overall pick.

How the lottery works: Each of the 14 teams that didn’t make the playoffs are eligible for the drawing. One thousand four-number combinations are divided among the teams based on each team’s regular season record.

Fourteen balls will be placed into a machine numbered 1-14. Four numbers are then drawn at random to determine who receives the first pick. The balls are placed back in the machine and the process is done three more times to determine the second, third and fourth picks. If a four-number combination is drawn that corresponds to a team already selected – then the balls will be redrawn until a new team has won.

After the first, second, third and fourth overall picks are determined, the remaining 10 teams are slotted 5-14 in the draft based on inverse order of regular season record.

When is the lottery:

The lottery airs at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday on ESPN.
