Jason Garrett: “No Doubt” Witten Can Still Play

February 28, 2019 - 5:10 pm

DALLAS (105.3 The Fan) - After a few weeks of conversations, Jason Garrett was finally able to react publicly to the news that Jason Witten would return to the Dallas Cowboys on a one-year deal.

“It was a great opportunity he had at ESPN to go be the lead analyst on ‘Monday Night Football,’ but I think playing football still tugged at his heart,” Garrett said, via Dallascowboys.com. “I think he felt like there was still some meat on the bone, things he wanted to accomplish. And I just think he loves it and wants to be in this environment."

The Cowboys caught everyone by surprise when they announced the deal this afternoon.

“The fire inside of me to compete and play this game is just burning too strong,” Witten said in a statement released by the team. “This team has a great group of rising young stars, and I want to help them make a run at a championship. This was completely my decision, and I am very comfortable with it. I’m looking forward to getting back in the dirt.”

Garrett says Witten's addition will help improve the team's tight end group.

“I think the biggest thing you try to create on your team is competition,” he said. “It’s not really about being a progress stopper. It’s about trying to play the best guys.”

The biggest challenge Witten will face in his return to the game was the fact he took a season off, but does Garrett think that will be an issue?

“There’s no doubt in his mind that he can still play, and there’s no doubt in my mind he can still play,” Garrett said. “I’m excited to have him back.”
