Report: Stars Unwilling To Include Elite Prospect In Deal For Karlsson

DALLAS (105.3 The Fan/AP) - After striking out on John Tavares, the Dallas Stars have their eyes on a star defenseman.

The Stars are one of three teams that have been in discussions with the Ottawa Senators to acquire Erik Karlsson, according to multiple reports. There's just one problem, they refuse to include their No. 1 prospect in a deal.

According to Chris Stevenson of The Athletic in Ottawa, The Senators are asking for 18-year-old Miro Heiskanen but the Stars are balking at this point.

Stevenson says it could be a deal-breaker for the Senators if Jim Nill and the Stars don't include the young defenseman.

Ottawa made a contract offer to the Norris Trophy-winning captain and 2019 free agent, but it's not a great sign that the real negotiating is only just beginning.

"We're not going there," GM Pierre Dorion said on June 2. "We don't really want to talk about roster players, contract negotiations, trades, all these things, but I think we owe it to our fans and we made a promise at the town hall that we would make a contract offer to Erik Karlsson and we've done so."

Tick, tick, tick. Even a year away, the pressure is on the Senators to sign Karlsson long term or trade him before the deadline so they don't end up like the Islanders.
